The engine and transmission communicate constantly.

Stored fault information usually provides the better starting point.


Why Restarting Can Make the Transmission Feel Normal Again

An electronic transmission fault may trigger restricted operation.

Restarting the vehicle can reset that strategy temporarily if the fault is no longer immediately present.

The Mercedes may drive normally again.

Then:

  1. The fault condition returns.
  2. The transmission-control module detects it.

Mercedes refers to the integrated transmission-control unit on 722.9 systems as the VGS, associated with the electrohydraulic controller or EHS/valve-body assembly. This matters because a transmission fault may be electronic without requiring complete transmission replacement.


What Does a Transmission Speed Sensor Do?

The transmission controller needs to know how various internal components are rotating.

Speed information helps it determine:

  • Which gear is actually engaged
  • Whether clutch slip exists
  • Whether a commanded shift occurred correctly
  • Whether transmission operation matches expectations

If a speed signal becomes unreliable, the transmission may:

  • Shift incorrectly
  • Enter limp mode

Is the sensor wrong—or is it reporting something wrong?

The 9G-Tronic 725.0 is a newer nine-speed transmission generation.

Because transmission designs evolve, diagnostic procedures that apply to a 722.9 should not automatically be applied to a 725.0.
