The 986 was the original production Boxster generation.

It uses early water-cooled flat-six architecture and brought many of the same M96 engine concepts later associated with the 996-generation 911.

The 986 is now old enough that:

Porsche 986 IMS Bearing

IMS-bearing relevance depends on the model year and engine.

Specialist documentation from LN Engineering describes:

  • 1997–1999 cars as generally using dual-row IMS bearings
  • 2000–2005 cars as generally using the smaller single-row design
  • 2006–2008 M96/M97 engines as using a larger single-row bearing that is not externally serviceable without engine disassembly

That means:

“It has an IMS bearing”

is not enough information.

The design matters.


Earlier vs. Later IMS Risk

The smaller single-row bearing used in many 2000–2005 cars is the design most associated with historical IMS failures.

That does not mean:

every early Boxster needs immediate engine work.

The right discussion includes:

  • Exact year
  • Engine history
  • Whether the IMS has already been addressed
  • What replacement system was installed
  • Current mileage
  • Clutch condition

Preventive planning should be based on the actual vehicle.


Clutch Work & IMS Opportunity

On applicable manual-transmission cars, clutch replacement already involves transmission removal.

That can create a logical opportunity to:

  • Inspect the rear main seal
  • Evaluate IMS history
  • Address a serviceable IMS bearing where appropriate

This is an example of using labor overlap intelligently.

It does not mean every nearby part automatically needs replacement.


Porsche 987 Boxster & Cayman

The 987 generation expanded the mid-engine Porsche family and introduced the Cayman coupe.

Depending on year and engine, 987 service may involve:

Cayman S / Boxster S Bore Scoring

Bore scoring is especially relevant to certain 3.4L M97 Cayman S and later Boxster S engines.

LN Engineering identifies M97.21/M97.22 3.4L engines among the Boxster/Cayman engines it most commonly receives for bore-scoring repair.

That does not mean every 3.4L car is damaged.

It means those engines deserve informed inspection when:

  • Symptoms are present
  • Oil consumption is high
  • The car is being purchased
  • Engine condition materially affects the decision

Smaller Boxster / Cayman Engines & Bore Scoring

Not all M96/M97 Boxster and Cayman engines have the same bore-scoring risk.

LN Engineering notes that:

  • 2.5L
  • 2.7L
  • 3.2L

Boxster-family engines are much less commonly associated with classic bore scoring than the 3.4L S engines.

That is a good example of why broad statements like:

“All old Boxsters score bores”

are not useful.

Engine family matters.


Bore Scoring Symptoms

Possible clues may include:

  • Cold-start ticking
  • Oil consumption
  • Smoke
  • Sooty exhaust
  • Metallic wear material

But none of those symptoms alone proves scoring.

A proper evaluation may involve:

  • Borescope inspection
  • Oil/filter inspection
  • Supporting mechanical tests

before major repair decisions are made.


Borescope Technique Matters

On M96/M97 engines, simply looking through the spark-plug hole may not be enough to identify early scoring.

Specialist guidance recommends attention to the lower thrust side of the cylinders, where scoring may begin.

A quick look is not necessarily a complete inspection.


Porsche 981 Boxster & Cayman

The 981 generation moved the Boxster and Cayman farther into the modern Porsche era.

Depending on model, it may use:

  • Naturally aspirated flat-six engines
  • Direct injection
  • PDK
  • Manual transmission
  • PASM
  • Sport Chrono
  • More advanced chassis electronics

The classic serviceable IMS-bearing concern does not apply to the 981 in the same way it does to M96/M97 cars.

That changes the list of likely problems significantly.


Porsche 718 Boxster & Cayman

The 718 generation introduced turbocharged four-cylinder engines to the regular Boxster and Cayman range.

Porsche announced the 718 family as a new model series beginning with the 2016 transition.

Depending on variant, 718 service may involve:

  • Turbocharged flat-four
  • Naturally aspirated 4.0L flat-six
  • PDK
  • Manual transmission
  • Turbo boost control
  • Direct injection
  • PASM
  • Advanced chassis electronics

The 718 badge alone still does not tell us which engine is installed.


Porsche 718 Turbocharged Flat-Four

Many standard 718 Boxster and Cayman models use turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

Possible areas of diagnosis may include:

  • Turbocharger
  • Wastegate
  • Charge-air system
  • Boost sensors
  • Direct injection
  • Cooling
  • Ignition

A low-boost fault does not automatically mean:

bad turbocharger.

A charge-air leak, actuator or sensor issue may produce the same symptom.


718 Bore Scoring

Later 718 four-cylinder engines use different cylinder technology from M96/M97-era engines.

LN Engineering notes that 991.2 and 718 four-cylinder SUMEbore engines are less commonly associated with classic bore scoring than the older M96/M97 engines.

That means applying early Cayman S bore-scoring assumptions to every 718 is inappropriate.


718 GTS 4.0

The 718 GTS 4.0 uses a naturally aspirated flat-six rather than the turbocharged four-cylinder found in many other 718 models.

That changes the diagnostic picture.

Possible service areas can include:

  • Direct injection
  • Ignition
  • Cooling
  • PDK or manual transmission
  • PASM
  • Exhaust/emissions systems

Again:

same body family, very different engine architecture.


Cayman GT4 / GT4 RS / Spyder

GT-oriented Boxster and Cayman variants use more specialized hardware.

Depending on the car, this may include:

  • Naturally aspirated flat-six engines
  • High-performance cooling
  • Specialized suspension
  • Larger brakes
  • GT-specific aero
  • Performance-oriented transmission calibration

These vehicles should not be treated as ordinary base Boxster/Cayman applications.


Current 718 Model Family

Porsche’s current model information includes:

  • 718 Cayman
  • 718 Boxster
  • Cayman S
  • Boxster S
  • GTS 4.0
  • Cayman GT4 RS
  • Spyder RS

That breadth is another reason one generic “718 repair” list is insufficient.


Porsche Boxster / Cayman Air-Oil Separator

M96/M97-era cars use an air-oil separator as part of crankcase ventilation.

A failed AOS can create:

  • Heavy smoke
  • Oil consumption
  • Rough idle
  • Lean faults
  • Misfires
  • Abnormal crankcase vacuum

Those symptoms can overlap with more serious engine problems.

That makes AOS testing important before jumping immediately to conclusions about:

  • Rings
  • Bore scoring
  • Internal engine failure

Smoke Does Not Automatically Mean Bore Scoring

A smoking Boxster or Cayman may have:

  • AOS failure
  • Oil overfill
  • Internal engine wear
  • Other oil-ingestion issue

A cloud of smoke can look dramatic.

The severity of the symptom does not automatically tell us the severity of the repair.


Porsche Boxster / Cayman Oil Leaks

Possible leak sources depend on the generation.

On older M96/M97 cars, possible areas may include:

  • Cam covers
  • Rear main seal
  • IMS flange
  • Oil pan
  • Other sealing surfaces

Later cars can develop leaks from different:

  • Covers
  • Housings
  • Oil pans
  • Filters/coolers

The rule stays the same:

Find where the oil starts.


Rear Main Seal vs. IMS

These are different components.

Rear Main Seal

Seals the crankshaft near the transmission.

IMS Bearing

Supports the intermediate shaft on applicable engines.

A leak at the back of the engine does not mean the IMS bearing is failing.

And an IMS concern does not automatically mean the rear main seal is leaking.


Mid-Engine Cooling Systems

Boxster and Cayman models place the engine behind the passenger compartment while major radiators sit toward the front of the car.

That means coolant travels through long circuits.

Possible cooling-system concerns can include:

  • Water pump
  • Thermostat
  • Front radiators
  • Coolant tank
  • Pipes
  • Fans
  • Air trapped after repairs

Leak location may be far from the engine itself.


Water Pump Problems

Possible symptoms include:

  • Coolant leak
  • Noise
  • Overheating
  • Temperature warning
  • Poor circulation

But an overheating Boxster or Cayman does not automatically need a water pump.

Other possibilities include:

  • Thermostat
  • Radiator
  • Fan
  • Coolant loss

The system needs to be tested.


Older 986 / 996 Water Pump Campaign

Porsche later issued a workshop campaign for certain older 986 Boxster and 996 911 cars involving coolant-pump impeller failure.

That underscores that pump problems can involve:

  • Leakage
  • Mechanical failure
  • Broken impeller material

and not just an external drip.


Front Radiators & Debris

The front radiator area can accumulate:

  • Leaves
  • Road debris
  • Dirt

which can reduce airflow and trap moisture.

A front bumper opening may look clear while debris remains packed farther inside.

Periodic inspection is useful, especially on regularly driven cars.


Correct Cooling-System Bleeding

Mid-engine layout makes cooling-system filling important.

Air pockets can create:

  • Temperature fluctuation
  • Poor heater output
  • Circulation problems

Proper filling and bleeding after cooling-system repairs matters.


Porsche Boxster / Cayman PDK

Later Boxster and Cayman models may use PDK dual-clutch transmissions.

Possible complaints include:

  • Harsh shifts
  • Delayed engagement
  • Shudder
  • Warning messages
  • Limp mode

Potential causes may involve:

  • Clutch behavior

  • High-pressure pump

  • Direct injectors

A low rail-pressure fault tells us:

the target was not achieved.

It does not automatically identify the failed component.


Misfire Diagnosis

A misfire can be caused by:

  • Spark plug
  • Coil
  • Injector
  • Fuel pressure
  • Intake leak
  • AOS/PCV
  • Boost issue
  • Mechanical engine condition

The cylinder number tells us where combustion failed.

It does not tell us why.


718 Turbo / Boost Diagnosis

Turbocharged 718 models add:

  • Intercooling

  • Low boost
