Mercedes-Benz Service A & Service B in Fort Collins, CO

Mercedes Maintenance Is More Than an Oil Change

If your Mercedes-Benz dashboard says Service A Due, Service B Due, or tells you that maintenance is approaching, the vehicle is asking for more than a generic oil change.

Mercedes-Benz uses scheduled maintenance intervals to help keep the engine, brakes, fluids, filters and other systems serviced throughout the vehicle’s life.

But there is an important distinction:

Service A and Service B are frameworks—not a reason to perform the exact same maintenance on every Mercedes.

Your vehicle’s model, engine, age, mileage, previous maintenance and additional service requirements all matter.

At A&B Import Auto, we’ve maintained and repaired Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Fort Collins for more than 40 years. We perform Mercedes Service A and Service B maintenance while looking at what your particular vehicle actually needs.

Our goal is to keep your Mercedes properly maintained without turning every service visit into an unnecessary list of repairs.

What Is Mercedes-Benz Service A?

Service A is one of the primary scheduled maintenance services used by Mercedes-Benz.

On many modern Mercedes vehicles, the first Service A occurs at approximately one year or 10,000 miles, although the exact interval and required maintenance should always be verified for the specific vehicle.

Typical Service A maintenance can include items such as:

  • Engine oil and oil filter replacement
  • Fluid-level inspection and correction
  • Tire-pressure inspection
  • Brake inspection
  • General vehicle inspection
  • Maintenance indicator reset

Additional maintenance may be due depending on the model, mileage and service history.

That last point matters.

A Mercedes with 10,000 miles and a Mercedes with 70,000 miles may both display a Service A reminder, but that does not mean the two vehicles necessarily need identical maintenance.

What Is Mercedes-Benz Service B?

Service B is the alternating scheduled maintenance service that generally follows Service A.

On many Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the first Service B occurs at approximately 20,000 miles, or roughly one year after the first Service A.

Service B generally includes the fundamental maintenance performed during Service A along with additional items.

Depending on the vehicle, Service B commonly involves:

  • Engine oil and oil filter replacement
  • Fluid-level inspection and correction
  • Tire-pressure inspection
  • Brake inspection
  • Cabin dust or combination filter replacement
  • Brake-fluid service
  • Maintenance indicator reset

Again, your Mercedes may have additional maintenance requirements based on its model, powertrain, age and mileage.

Service A vs. Service B: What’s the Difference?

The simplest explanation is:

Service A is the primary maintenance visit. Service B is generally the more comprehensive alternating maintenance visit.

Service B commonly adds maintenance such as brake-fluid replacement and cabin filtration to the fundamental items performed during Service A.

But Mercedes maintenance becomes more useful when we stop thinking of A and B as two fixed packages.

There are really two questions:

  1. Is Service A or Service B due?
  2. What additional maintenance is due on this particular Mercedes right now?

The second question is often the more important one.

Why Your Mileage and Service History Matter

A dashboard maintenance reminder cannot always tell the entire history of a used vehicle.

That is especially relevant when:

  • You recently purchased the Mercedes
  • Maintenance records are incomplete
  • The vehicle has changed repair shops
  • The maintenance indicator was previously reset
  • Several years have passed with relatively low mileage
  • The vehicle has substantially higher mileage
  • Previous services may have omitted certain maintenance items

This is why we review the vehicle rather than blindly treating the letter displayed on the dashboard as the complete maintenance plan.

A properly maintained Mercedes should have its actual service history considered alongside its current maintenance reminder.

Additional Mercedes Maintenance Items

As a Mercedes accumulates mileage and age, other services may become due independently of whether the dashboard currently says Service A or Service B.

Depending on the particular Mercedes, these may include:

Spark Plugs

Spark-plug service intervals vary by engine and model.

Modern turbocharged Mercedes engines rely on properly functioning ignition systems for smooth operation, fuel efficiency and performance.

Worn spark plugs may eventually contribute to misfires, rough running or ignition-system stress.

Engine Air Filters

The engine air filter protects the engine and airflow-management system from dirt and debris.

Replacement needs depend on both the vehicle’s maintenance schedule and the condition of the filter.

Cabin Air Filters

Cabin filtration helps keep dust, debris and contaminants out of the HVAC system and passenger compartment.

Some Mercedes vehicles use more than one type of cabin or combination filter.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time.

For that reason, brake-fluid maintenance is based not simply on brake-pad wear but also on time and the vehicle’s maintenance requirements.

Transmission Service

Mercedes-Benz has used numerous automatic transmissions across its model range, including 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic applications.

Transmission service requirements depend on the specific transmission and vehicle.

When transmission maintenance is due, using the correct fluid, filter and service procedure matters.

Drivetrain Fluids

4MATIC vehicles contain additional drivetrain components that may have their own lubrication and maintenance requirements.

Depending on the model, maintenance considerations can include transfer-case or differential fluids.

Coolant and Cooling-System Maintenance

Cooling systems deserve attention as the vehicle ages.

In addition to scheduled fluid maintenance where applicable, we inspect for deterioration or leaks involving components such as:

  • Hoses
  • Expansion tanks
  • Water pumps
  • Thermostats
  • Radiators
  • Connections and seals

Drive Belts

Accessory drive belts and related components should be inspected for wear, cracking, noise or deterioration.

Mercedes ASSYST and Maintenance Reminders

Many Mercedes-Benz vehicles use an onboard maintenance system to calculate and display upcoming service needs.

Depending on the generation, you may see messages such as:

  • Service A Due
  • Service B Due
  • Service Due in X Days
  • Service Exceeded
  • Additional letters or service information

The maintenance display helps identify when service is approaching, but the car’s maintenance history and model-specific requirements still need to be considered.

After the appropriate maintenance is completed, we can reset the maintenance indicator as part of the service.

A reset should indicate that the required maintenance was actually performed—not simply be used to make the message disappear.

What Happens During a Mercedes Maintenance Visit at A&B?

We want routine maintenance to accomplish more than changing fluids.

A maintenance visit is also an opportunity to identify developing problems before they turn into breakdowns or expensive secondary damage.

Depending on the service and vehicle, we may evaluate areas such as:

  • Engine oil and fluid condition
  • Brake condition
  • Tires
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Fluid leaks
  • Cooling system
  • Belts
  • Battery and charging condition
  • Exterior lighting
  • Filters
  • Undercarriage
  • Visible drivetrain concerns

If we find something, we separate what we see into useful categories.

Needs Attention Now

These are problems that affect safety, reliability, vehicle operation or risk causing additional damage.

Maintenance Due

These are scheduled services that are actually due based on the vehicle.

Worth Monitoring

Not every seep, worn bushing or aging component requires immediate replacement.

If something can reasonably be monitored, we’d rather explain that than make every imperfection sound urgent.

Why Mercedes Maintenance Requires Vehicle-Specific Information

Mercedes-Benz has produced an enormous variety of engines, transmissions, drivetrains and chassis systems.

A C-Class, S-Class, GLE and AMG vehicle may all display the words Service A, but underneath that reminder they can be very different machines.

Maintenance requirements may differ based on:

  • Engine family
  • Transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive or 4MATIC
  • AMG or standard model
  • Model year
  • Vehicle age
  • Mileage
  • Previous maintenance

This is one reason we don’t believe Mercedes maintenance should be reduced to a universal checklist.

We identify the vehicle and determine what maintenance applies to it.

More Than 40 Years of Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Experience

A&B Import Auto has worked on Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Fort Collins for more than four decades.

We’ve serviced Mercedes vehicles from eras when maintenance involved largely mechanical systems through today’s turbocharged, direct-injected vehicles with sophisticated electronics, active suspension and interconnected control modules.

That history gives us a useful perspective on maintenance.

We don’t just want your Mercedes to make it through its next service interval.

We want to identify the maintenance and developing issues that can help the vehicle remain reliable as it ages.

Modern tools and technical information matter.

So does having seen what happens to Mercedes-Benz vehicles after five, ten, fifteen or twenty years on the road.

Mercedes Maintenance Can Prevent More Than Wear

Routine maintenance also gives us opportunities to identify problems that are common as Mercedes vehicles age.

Depending on the model, these may include:

  • Engine oil leaks
  • Crankcase ventilation problems
  • Cooling-system leaks
  • Suspension and control-arm wear
  • Battery or charging-system deterioration
  • AIRMATIC concerns
  • 4MATIC drivetrain issues
  • Timing or camshaft-system faults
  • Engine-mount deterioration
  • Turbocharger or boost-system problems

Finding an early coolant seep during maintenance is very different from discovering the same problem after the engine overheats.

Likewise, identifying a deteriorating suspension component before it creates abnormal tire wear can save both inconvenience and secondary expense.

Maintenance is partly about replacing scheduled items.

It is also about knowing what condition the rest of the vehicle is in.

Do I Need the Mercedes Dealer for Service A or Service B?

Mercedes-Benz scheduled maintenance can be performed by a qualified independent repair facility.

The important questions are whether the shop:

  • Understands Mercedes maintenance requirements
  • Uses appropriate fluids and components
  • Has Mercedes-capable diagnostic equipment
  • Has access to vehicle-specific service information
  • Properly documents the work performed
  • Understands Mercedes vehicles beyond basic oil-change service

A&B Import Auto has spent more than 40 years servicing European vehicles in Fort Collins and provides both Mercedes maintenance and advanced Mercedes diagnosis and repair.

That means if we discover a problem during routine maintenance, you don’t need another shop simply because the issue has become more complicated.

Mercedes-AMG Service A & Service B

AMG models share the Mercedes maintenance philosophy but deserve additional attention because of their performance-oriented components and operating demands.

Depending on the particular AMG, differences may include:

  • Higher-output engines
  • Specialized fluids
  • Larger performance braking systems
  • Performance suspension
  • Different drivetrain components
  • Additional model-specific maintenance

We service Mercedes-AMG vehicles according to the actual vehicle rather than assuming the maintenance needs are identical to a standard Mercedes model.
