  • Large amounts of low-RPM torque

But emissions control adds several downstream systems.

  • NOx sensing
  • EGR

These systems have to work together.

A fault in one can sometimes affect the operation or diagnostic results of another.


Mercedes BlueTEC DEF System

DEF — Diesel Exhaust Fluid — is used by the selective catalytic reduction system.

It is injected into the exhaust in a controlled quantity so the SCR catalyst can reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions.

Mercedes specifies DEF conforming to ISO 22241 and warns against diluting or contaminating it.

The DEF system can involve:

  • DEF tank
  • Pump
  • Heater
  • Level sensing
  • Quality or concentration monitoring where applicable
  • DEF injector
  • Plumbing
  • Electronic controls

A DEF-related warning therefore does not automatically mean:

“Add fluid.”

Sometimes the level really is low.

Other times the system has detected a fault.


Mercedes “Remaining Starts” Warning

BlueTEC vehicles can display a countdown limiting how many engine starts remain if the DEF system reaches certain fault or low-fluid conditions.

Mercedes owner documentation specifically describes messages such as:

Remaining Starts: 16

when DEF reaches a minimum level.

That warning should not be ignored.

The important distinction is whether the countdown is being caused by:

  • Low DEF
  • DEF delivery problem
  • SCR-system fault
  • NOx-related fault
  • Another emissions-system problem

Adding DEF fixes only the first situation.


Why Adding DEF Doesn’t Fix Every DEF Warning

Suppose the DEF tank is full, but the vehicle still believes the SCR system cannot reduce NOx adequately.

Possible causes could involve:

  • DEF injector operation
  • Pump or pressure
  • Heater
  • Sensor information
  • NOx sensor
  • SCR catalyst performance
  • Wiring
  • Control logic

The driver sees a DEF or emissions warning.

The fluid itself may be perfectly fine.

Diagnosis determines whether the problem is:

quantity, delivery, sensing, or catalytic performance.


Mercedes NOx Sensors

NOx sensors measure nitrogen-oxide levels in the exhaust.

BlueTEC systems may use sensor information before and after the SCR catalyst to determine how effectively the aftertreatment system is operating.

A NOx-related fault can involve:

  • Failed sensor
  • Wiring
  • Power supply
  • Exhaust leak
  • SCR performance
  • DEF delivery
  • Another emissions fault affecting the reading

The sensor may be wrong.

Or it may be correctly reporting that the system is not reducing NOx as expected.

“NOx Sensor Code” Does Not Automatically Mean “Replace the Sensor”

This follows the same diagnostic principle we use throughout Mercedes repair.

Imagine the downstream NOx reading is too high.

Possibility one:

The downstream sensor is defective.

Possibility two:

The sensor is correct and the SCR system is not working properly.

Installing a new sensor in the second situation changes nothing.

Testing the system and comparing relevant data gives us a better answer.


Mercedes SCR System

SCR stands for Selective Catalytic Reduction.

The system uses DEF and an SCR catalyst to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions.

For SCR to work correctly:

  • DEF must be present
  • DEF must be delivered correctly
  • Exhaust conditions must be suitable
  • Sensor information must be accurate
  • The catalyst must function properly

A fault anywhere in that chain can create an SCR-related warning.


Mercedes DEF Injector Problems

The DEF injector meters fluid into the exhaust.

Potential problems can include:

  • Injector restriction
  • Crystallization
  • Electrical fault
  • Poor spray pattern
  • Fluid delivery issue

DEF can form crystalline deposits as its water content evaporates.

Those deposits can sometimes provide useful visual evidence around a leaking or malfunctioning part of the system.

But deposits alone do not identify every underlying problem.


DEF Heater Problems

DEF freezes at approximately 12°F (-11°C).

Mercedes therefore equips BlueTEC systems with provisions for cold-weather operation, including DEF heating on applicable vehicles.

That matters in Northern Colorado.

A heater-related fault can therefore appear especially relevant during cold-weather operation.

The system has to distinguish between:

  • Normal frozen DEF
  • Heating-system malfunction
  • Fluid-delivery problem

Why Colorado Weather Matters for BlueTEC

Fort Collins and Northern Colorado expose diesel systems to:

  • Cold winter starts
  • Mountain travel
  • High engine loads
  • Large temperature swings

Cold temperatures can affect:

  • DEF

  • Battery output

Mercedes Diesel Particulate Filter — DPF

The DPF captures soot from diesel exhaust.

Rather than allowing that soot to accumulate indefinitely, the vehicle periodically raises exhaust temperature to burn much of it away.

This process is called regeneration.

For regeneration to work correctly, the engine and emissions system need appropriate:

  • Temperature
  • Operating conditions
  • Sensor information
  • Airflow
  • Fuel control

If soot accumulation becomes excessive or regeneration repeatedly fails, the vehicle may develop DPF-related faults.


DPF Regeneration

Regeneration can happen automatically during normal driving when the vehicle achieves the conditions needed to clean the filter.

Problems arise when the vehicle cannot complete regeneration successfully.

Potential contributors can include:

  • Short-trip driving
  • Engine faults
  • Exhaust temperature sensor faults
  • EGR problems
  • Boost problems

The filter may be the component storing the soot.

The reason the soot accumulated may originate somewhere else.


Why Replacing the DPF May Not Fix the Real Problem

Consider this sequence:

  1. An engine or emissions fault prevents proper regeneration.
  2. Soot accumulates in the DPF.
  3. The DPF eventually becomes overloaded.
  4. The filter is replaced.
  5. The original engine or regeneration fault remains.
  6. The replacement filter begins accumulating soot again.

The plugged DPF was real.

But it may have been a consequence rather than the original failure.

Good diagnosis asks:

Why did regeneration fail?


DPF Differential Pressure

The vehicle may monitor pressure before and after the particulate filter.

The difference can provide information about restriction.

But pressure readings depend on:

  • Sensor accuracy
  • Pressure lines
  • Exhaust flow
  • Engine load
  • Actual DPF restriction

A high-pressure reading might indicate a restricted filter.

Or the sensor system itself may be giving incorrect information.

Again, we verify before condemning the expensive component.


Exhaust Temperature Sensors

DPF regeneration depends heavily on exhaust temperature.

Temperature sensors help the engine-control system understand conditions throughout the exhaust.

A failed temperature sensor may interfere with:

Diesel Intake Deposits

Diesel engines recirculate exhaust through the EGR system.

That exhaust contains particulate matter.

Crankcase ventilation can introduce oil vapor.

Those materials can combine in the intake system and form deposits.

Depending on severity and engine design, deposits may affect:

  • Airflow
  • Intake runners

But “carbon buildup” should not become a universal explanation for every diesel fault.

An injector can fail in different ways.

  • How much fuel it delivers into the cylinder
  • How much fuel it returns internally

Injector Leak-Off / Return Flow

If an injector leaks excessive fuel internally back through the return system, rail pressure can become difficult to build.

This may be particularly noticeable during starting.

A high-pressure pump can be working while rail pressure remains low because too much fuel is escaping through an injector.

Testing helps distinguish that from pump failure.


Mercedes Glow Plugs

Diesel engines use glow plugs to assist cold combustion.

They are particularly important during colder starting conditions.

Possible glow-system symptoms can include:

  • Hard cold starting
  • Glow-plug warning
  • Rough operation immediately after cold start
  • Stored glow-system faults

One glow-plug fault does not necessarily mean every plug or the control module is bad.

The circuit can be tested.


Glow Plug Control Module

The glow system also includes electronic control.

Possible faults may involve:

  • Individual glow plugs
  • Wiring
  • Glow-control unit
  • Power supply

Cold-weather symptoms make the glow system particularly relevant in Colorado.


Hard Starting: Glow System or Fuel System?

One upstream fault can create several downstream symptoms.

That is why BlueTEC diagnosis should look for cause-and-effect relationships, not simply count fault codes.


The BlueTEC Approved Emission Modification

Certain older Mercedes BlueTEC vehicles were involved in an Approved Emission Modification, often abbreviated AEM.

Depending on the vehicle, that modification involved software and emissions-system hardware such as:

  • DPF
  • SCR catalyst
  • NOx sensors
  • DEF injector
  • EGR components
  • Intake controls
  • Engine-control software

Mercedes also provided extended emissions warranty coverage on qualifying modified vehicles.

If you own an affected BlueTEC vehicle, checking its modification and warranty status can be worthwhile before paying independently for a covered emissions repair.


Why AEM Status Matters Before Certain Repairs

This is one place where we do not want to ignore manufacturer history.

If a covered emissions component may still fall under Mercedes’ extended emissions warranty, the best repair decision may be different.

This particular repair may be worth checking with Mercedes-Benz before you pay us to do it.
