Audi’s S tronic transmission is one of the reasons many modern Audis shift so quickly.
It is also very different from a conventional automatic transmission.
Audi uses the S tronic name for several dual-clutch transmission designs. Within the broader Volkswagen Group, similar transmissions are commonly referred to as DSG — Direct-Shift Gearbox.
These transmissions combine characteristics of:

What Is Audi S tronic?
S tronic is Audi’s name for its family of dual-clutch transmissions.
A conventional automatic generally uses a torque converter.
A dual-clutch transmission uses two clutch systems.
One clutch controls one group of gears while the second clutch controls the other.
In simplified terms:
- one clutch may handle odd-numbered gears,
- the other handles even-numbered gears.
While the vehicle is driving in one gear, the transmission can prepare the next gear on the other shaft.
When it is time to shift, one clutch disengages while the other engages.
That allows extremely quick gear changes.
Is S tronic the Same as DSG?
Conceptually, yes.
DSG is Volkswagen Group terminology for a dual-clutch gearbox.
S tronic is the Audi branding used for many Audi dual-clutch transmissions.
But saying a vehicle has “a DSG” still does not tell us exactly which transmission it has.
Several different gearboxes fall under that umbrella.
Not Every Audi Automatic Is an S tronic
Audi has used several different automatic-transmission designs.
Depending on model and year, an Audi may have:
- S tronic / DSG dual-clutch transmission
- Tiptronic torque-converter automatic

A Q7 with a ZF Tiptronic should not receive the same service procedure as an S4 with a DL501 S tronic.

Does Audi Recommend S tronic Fluid Changes?
On many applicable transmissions, yes.
Audi maintenance schedules have specifically called for:
DSG / S tronic fluid replacement
and, on certain applications:
replacement of the transmission filter element.
Historical Audi U.S. maintenance schedules have listed service intervals around 35,000 to 40,000 miles for particular S tronic-equipped vehicles.
For example, Audi’s maintenance documentation has specified fluid and filter service for applications including various:
- A3
- TT
- TTS
- S4
- S5

depending on model year and transmission.
The important point is not that every Audi uses exactly the same interval.

It was designed to handle substantially more torque than many smaller transverse DSG units.

The DL501 is a good example of why proper transmission identification matters.

Fluid level cannot necessarily be accurately determined by simply pouring in the volume that came out.
Why Transmission Fluid Temperature Matters
Modern Audi transmissions often use a level-check procedure rather than a traditional dipstick.
The fluid expands as it warms.
Therefore Audi service procedures may specify checking the level within a defined temperature range.
The diagnostic tool allows the technician to monitor actual transmission-fluid temperature while filling.
If the fluid level is set at the wrong temperature:
- the transmission can be overfilled,
- or it can be underfilled.
Either condition can create problems.
DSG Filters
Some S tronic transmissions use a serviceable filter.
The filter captures:

If a transmission has a scheduled serviceable filter, replacing the fluid while leaving an old restricted filter in place defeats part of the purpose of the service.
What Is the DSG / S tronic Mechatronic Unit?
The mechatronic unit is one of the key components of a dual-clutch transmission.
It combines:
- hydraulic control
- solenoid valves
- electronic control
- sensors
to operate functions such as:
- clutch engagement
- gear selection
- hydraulic pressure
The transmission computer decides what should happen.
The mechatronic system makes it happen hydraulically.
Common Mechatronic Symptoms
A failing mechatronic system can produce symptoms such as:
- harsh shifts
- delayed engagement
- transmission warning
- limp mode
- gear-selection problems
- inability to select certain gears
- inconsistent clutch operation

But those symptoms do not automatically prove the entire mechatronic assembly needs replacement.

Some behavior that feels unusual to a driver may be normal for a dual-clutch transmission.
For example, at very low speed the transmission is physically slipping and engaging clutch packs rather than relying on a torque converter.

That does not mean every low-speed sensation is normal.
But expectations should reflect the transmission architecture.
DSG Shudder When Taking Off
Shudder or vibration during initial acceleration can come from several possible causes.

Does a DSG Fluid Change Require a Scan Tool?
On many Audi S tronic transmissions, scan-tool access is an important part of performing the service correctly.
The technician may need to monitor:
- transmission fluid temperature
- selector position
- fault information
and may perform:
- adaptations
- basic settings
depending on the service or repair.
That is one reason we do not treat S tronic service like a simple engine oil change.
Should an Audi DSG Be Flushed?
We generally distinguish between a manufacturer-specified fluid service and a generic transmission flush.
Audi’s scheduled maintenance procedures typically describe:
- draining the fluid,
- replacing specified filters where applicable,
- refilling with the correct fluid,
- setting the fluid level according to procedure.
A power-flush machine is not automatically part of that process.

Can Changing DSG Fluid Damage the Transmission?
Properly servicing a healthy transmission with the correct fluid and procedure should not damage it.
However, an already failing transmission can sometimes become more obvious after service.

- excessive contamination
new fluid cannot repair those conditions.

“Lifetime Fluid” vs. Scheduled Service
The phrase “lifetime fluid” creates considerable confusion.
Audi itself has published maintenance schedules calling for DSG/S tronic fluid replacement on applicable transmissions.
That is strong evidence that at least those transmissions were never intended to simply operate forever without fluid service.
However, the exact maintenance schedule varies by:
- model
- model year
- transmission type
We verify the factory schedule for the individual vehicle.
Audi’s current maintenance resources likewise tell owners to use VIN/model information to determine vehicle-specific scheduled maintenance rather than assuming all models receive identical service.
Audi S tronic Service vs. Haldex Service
These are frequently confused.
On a transverse quattro Audi such as certain A3 or TT models, the vehicle can have:
DSG / S tronic transmission fluid
and separately:
Haldex / AWD coupling fluid
and potentially:
rear differential gear oil.
They are not the same fluid.
They are not the same system.
Servicing the DSG does not mean the quattro coupling has been serviced.
