PCV vs. CCV: what do the terms actually mean?

- Crankcase ventilation (CCV) is the broad system: it manages blow-by gases that pass the piston rings and enter the crankcase.
- Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) describes the controlled use of intake-system pressure differences to move those gases out of the crankcase and back into the engine to be burned.
- A closed crankcase-ventilation system keeps the fresh-air side and blow-by return path inside the metered intake system rather than venting crankcase vapors to atmosphere.
On a turbocharged Audi, the routing changes with operating condition. Under manifold vacuum, cleaned blow-by can be drawn toward the intake manifold. Under boost, check valves prevent boost pressure from pressurizing the crankcase and the ventilation path can shift toward the low-pressure turbocharger inlet. That is why an Audi PCV assembly commonly contains more than a simple one-way valve: it may include a pressure regulator, non-return valves, oil-separation stages and calibrated passages.
Why crankcase pressure matters
The system has two jobs at once: move blow-by gas and keep oil inside the engine. Too much crankcase vacuum can create whistling, idle problems and an oil cap that is unusually difficult to remove. Too much positive pressure can encourage oil leakage and stress engine seals. Either direction is a reason to measure crankcase pressure instead of replacing parts solely because a vehicle has an oil leak.

Audi 2.0T EA888 PCV failures
The 2.0T is one of the best examples of why “PCV valve” is an oversimplification. Audi’s EA888 documentation describes both coarse and fine oil separation. On later versions, blow-by is first stripped of a large portion of its oil in the engine, then routed to a fine oil-separator module at the cylinder head. The module also regulates crankcase pressure and directs vapors to the appropriate intake path.
Common signs we look for on a 2.0T
- Whistling or honking from the valve-cover / breather area, often most obvious at warm idle.
- Rough or elevated idle, fuel-trim problems, or an intake-air-leak fault such as P2279; P0507 may accompany excessive idle speed on applicable engines.
- Oil filler cap that is dramatically harder than normal to lift because crankcase vacuum is excessive.
- New or worsening oil consumption that cannot be explained by an external leak alone.
- Oil leakage where crankcase pressure regulation should be checked before assuming the seal itself is the only failure.
Generation matters. Early chain-driven EA888 engines and third-generation engines do not use identical breathers, calibrations or internal oil-separation paths. Even within “2.0T,” the VIN, engine code and installed revision should determine parts and test specifications.
Audi 3.0T PCV / crankcase-breather failures
EA837 supercharged 3.0T: the breather is buried in the V
The supercharged EA837 3.0T found in B8 S4/S5, C7 A6/A7, D4 A8, 8R Q5 and earlier Q7 applications places the crankcase pressure-regulating / breather assembly in the intake valley beneath the supercharger. This is mechanically important because a “PCV job” is not the same access level as replacing a top-mounted hose or valve on a simple engine.
Audi service information has specifically called for crankcase pressure-regulating valve changes on 3.0 TFSI applications in certain campaigns and oil-consumption procedures. Symptoms can include abnormal oil use, vacuum-related driveability problems and mixture faults. Because the supercharger and valley components are disturbed for access, a correct repair plan also considers the condition of nearby seals, coolant plumbing and other age-related valley components rather than treating the breather as an isolated ten-minute part.
EA839 turbo 3.0T: same purpose, different architecture
The later EA839 turbocharged 3.0T used in B9/C8/4M-platform cars is a different engine family. Audi’s later V8 training material specifically points technicians back to the EA839 3.0T when explaining its oil-separator design, underscoring the family relationship in modern crankcase-ventilation architecture. These systems combine oil separation, pressure regulation and load-dependent vapor routing, so diagnosis should be based on the actual engine code and measured pressure behavior rather than assuming an EA837-style central breather.
Audi 4.0T: oil separator, PCV and charge-air-cooler issues
EA824 4.0T oil separator: a documented whistling failure
Audi issued technical guidance for 2013-2016 A6/A7/A8 models with the 4.0 TFSI describing metallic whistling or grinding at warm idle, sporadic MIL illumination, and DTC P2279 and/or P0507. Audi identified leakage in the crankcase breather module / pressure-regulating valve as the technical cause and later used a reinforced internal membrane. One practical confirmation in Audi service guidance is whether opening the oil filler cap changes the characteristic noise.
On the EA824 “hot-V” engine, the oil separator sits deep in the V near the intake and charge-air-cooling assembly. Charge-air coolers: do not confuse coolant ingestion with a PCV failure
The EA824 uses liquid-cooled charge-air coolers in the intake path. A charge-air cooler and an oil separator solve completely different problems: the separator removes engine oil from blow-by vapor; the charge-air cooler removes heat from compressed intake air. Because a liquid-cooled intercooler has coolant on one side of a heat exchanger and intake air on the other, an internal core leak can introduce coolant into the charge-air stream.
That distinction matters diagnostically. Unexplained coolant loss with no obvious external leak, repeated misfires, coolant residue in the intake tract, steam/white exhaust under the right conditions, or a cylinder that appears unusually “washed” should prompt investigation of the charge-air cooling system rather than automatically blaming the PCV. EA825 4.0T: bank-specific separators and active routing
The newer EA825 4.0T is not simply an updated EA824 breather. Audi training material shows an oil-separator module on each cylinder-head cover, separate breather paths for partial load and full load, non-return valves, pressure regulation and ECM involvement. Audi also documents a dedicated crankcase ventilation valve (N546) and pressure-safety logic. That makes chassis and engine-family identification especially important when an A8/S8, RS6/RS7 or SQ/RS Q8 arrives with whistling, air-leak or misfire complaints.
How A&B diagnoses an Audi PCV / CCV complaint
1. Identify the engine family and chassis. “Audi 3.0T” is not enough; EA837 and EA839 use different layouts, just as EA824 and EA825 4.0T engines do. Early and later 3.0 designs are different from each other.
2. Scan the engine before replacing parts. We look at DTCs, freeze-frame conditions, fuel trims and misfire data. P2279 or P0507 can support a breather diagnosis, but neither code by itself proves the PCV is bad.
3. Evaluate actual crankcase pressure behavior. Oil-cap behavior can be a clue, but measurement is more useful when the failure is ambiguous. Both excessive vacuum and unwanted positive pressure matter.
4. Smoke-test and inspect the complete air path when appropriate. A torn breather diaphragm is only one possible source of unmetered air. Hoses, intake seals and boost/charge plumbing must be considered.
5. Separate oil, coolant and air-system symptoms. Oil consumption, external oil leakage, internal coolant loss and intake-air leaks can overlap on turbocharged Audi engines. Correct diagnosis prevents a PCV replacement from masking a charge-air-cooler or other cooling-system problem.
